Happy New Years everyone!

Over the past year, we released over 1,000 prototypes thanks to the fruits of the Project Deluge lot. We hope to continue the trend going into the new year. So what better way to start off the new year with another sizeable release?

To start off the new year with a bang, we’re releasing 178 prototypes for various cart-based systems (it’s been a while, huh?). With almost 30 of them consisting of unreleased games, some of which you might have never seen before! These were generously donated to us over the years and evaluated by the same team that helped with Project Deluge. We’ve been sitting on these for quite a while now and can’t think of a better time than now to do something with them.

As you might have noticed, unfortunately, there’s no Sonic today. As of today, there are prototypes for seemingly every Sonic game out there. Hopefully, we will find something to share with you soon… 🦔

Finally, some thanks are definitely in order! As we said before a lot of people contributed prototypes for this release. Some wish to remain anonymous, however, we’d like to give special shoutouts to those who were patient enough to wait for us to finally get around to releasing these!

The Video Game History Foundation Logo.jpeg

First, we’d like to thank Frank Cifaldi from the Video Game History Foundation for providing us with the opportunity to release many of the prototypes that we have for today. While many of the prototypes for this release were given to us individually, many of them came from sources that have worked with Frank in an effort to digitize and archive as much as possible through the efforts of VGHF. There are just too many prototypes to list here! Some of the prototypes that came from Frank were spread and also given to the kind folks at SNESCentral.org and SMSPower.org. Without him, this and many other releases would not have been possible.

Along with Frank, we’d also like to thank Steve Lin for allowing us to release his NES/SNES/MD/GB prototypes today as well. Many of the games he shared with us were previously unreleased and often were only teased by other collectors like Reactor (Prototype) and Mer Wars (Prototype). He also provided one of the prototypes of the unreleased Payne Stewart Pro Golf (Prototype B) and San Francisco Rush: Extreme Racing (Game Boy Color Prototype) as well!

Next, we’d like to thank Stephan Reese for sharing a number of NES/SNES prototypes that you saw today. Stephan is no stranger to the site, as he was the one that provided us with the Final Fantasy 1 US localization prototype and the EarthBound localization prototype from a year ago. This time, Stephan provided us with some great NES prototypes of Dr. Mario (Prototype C), Dragon Warrior II (Prototype), NES Open Tournament Golf (Prototype), NES Play Action Football (Prototype), and Ninja Gaiden III: The Ancient Ship of Doom (Prototype). He was also kind enough to provide prototypes for the SNES such as Illusion of Gaia (Prototype B), MechWarrior (Prototype B), and Shadowrun (Prototype B). We hope that he continues to find more Nintendo goodies in the months to come!

We’d like to also thank Marcal Mora for generously donating the unreleased GBA RoboCop as this was a surprising find!

We’d like to thank the members of the Project Deluge team (ehw, Zoda, and Hwd45) for going through all of these games over the past several months on top of going through all of the stuff for the Deluge lot at the same time. We have gone through a few thousand prototypes within this year alone and next year looks no different. We’d like to thank Sazpaimon for hosting the holiday stream this year as well as all the other streams that were hosted over the course of this year.

Finally, we’d like to thank all the site contributors and other heroes from the other preservation communities like Obscure Gamers, Andrew Borman from the Museum of Play, Bock from SMSPower.org, Evan_G from SNESCentral.org, togemet2 and Marionova64 from Forest of Illusion, Game Preservation Society, Redump, TOSEC, Gaming Alexandria, The Cutting Room Floor and many many many more! The future remains bright for video game preservation with absolutely no end in sight. It’s possible that 2022 will be the brightest yet!

With that said, until next time! Have a happy holiday!
