A prototype of Saw, with Xbox 360, PS3 and Windows PC binaries (as well as config files for a Linux build)

Notes

  • Extensive debugging information
  • Comes with many documents about the game's design and development. May come from a developer's backup or similar source.
  • Contains several binaries, most of which are too outdated to run as they are not compatible with the game files:
CLICKTORUNEDTIOR.BAT - BAT file used to open the UE3 editor
SawGame.exe - 2009-05-27 00:08:30 - The PC executable, and the main executable, that's used by this build.
SawGame-XeRelease.xex - 2009-05-27 00:12:27 - The Xbox 360 executable that's used by this build
PC-ExampleGame.exe - 2008-03-20 17:39:53 - May be a UE3 example game, or may be an early build of Saw with this output file name. Does not run.
PC-GearGame.exe - 2008-03-20 17:11:53 - May be a build of Gears of War, or may be an early build of Saw with this output file name (there is an empty "GearGame" folder. Does not run.
ExampleGame-XeRelease.xex - 2008-03-18 23:14:04 - May be a UE3 example game, or may be an early build of Saw with this output file name. Does not run.
DEBUG-SawGame.exe - 2007-10-03 19:24:57 - A very early build of the game. Not compatible with the data files of the 2009 build.
SAWGAME-PS3Release.elf - Currently unknown - Unencrypted PS3 raw ELF build with symbols, no build date can be found.
SAWGAME-PS3Release.self - Currently unknown - Unencrypted PS3 Sony ELF build without symbols, no build date can be found - but may be earlier than SAWGAME-PS3Release.elf.
  • XEX information:
    • Header Maker ID: BT
    • Header Product Code: 2009
    • Header Title: Saw
    • Header PE Name: SawGame-XeRelease.exe
  • Miscellaneous Notes:
    • Game is emulatable in either Xenia or Xenia-Canary: Yes (as of December 25, 2022).
      • Issues: On real devkits and test kits this build can crash, even when pushed fresh from the UE3 editor. The only fix I could find is re-installing the 17489 recovery
  • CookedXenon that is included only contains the main menu and debug frontend. To play other levels on 360 you must open a level in the UE3 editor and in the top select Build > Play Level > On Xenon and it will cook the raw assets and push it to the devkit. CLICKTORUNEDTIOR.bat works fine to open the unreal editor. The PC build seems to run the raw assets so you can open SawGame.exe and just play
  • There is a very early sort of broken version of the intro level, IT IS ENTIRELY DIFFERENT TO RETAIL!!! You open fear_p with the command prompt or unreal console. The textures on the first trap are bugged. To get out of the trap, rotate the left stick counter-clockwise and mash all your face buttons. When the camera changes to the other side, rotate left stick clock-wise, mashing all the face buttons. When the camera turns to face the player, on the left stick spam up down up down up down. This is different to retail as retail makes you rotate clockwise the whole time. You will be free. You then go to the aids needle toilet trap to get a key to unlock the door to get out. In the final game there are numbers painted on the toilet doors and you look in a mirror to get a code for a padlock, there is no key in this spot in retail. In retail, after that intro room you go to another room and get a fuse from a toilet in there instead of in the intro room getting the key to the door in the toilet in there, on a timer. In the beta when you are free the TV turns off, in retail it remains on after the cutscene. The actual intro mission when you press start new game ends early after the cutscene that triggers when you enter the operating room with a placeholder credit screen and brings you back to the main menu. In retail after this operating minigame is where you encounter the first balance beam. Due to the mission ending early, the balance beam section is not there yet and obviously not done yet, as in fear_p its directly after the intro room. This build also uses early button textures for the balance beam. There are many many more differences and test maps.
  • There are 6 Milestone hubs, MS11, MS12, MS13, MS14, MS15, and SawSystems (jigsaw_p) jigsaw_p seems to be the earliest, art room leads you to a cut area, Childrens Ward.
