Is that the correct date for this? The sonic retro page has a different date: http://info.sonicretro.org/Sonic_Mega_Collection_(prototype)

This is the date that was written on the NR disc itself, the 12/17/2001 date is wrong (that's almost a whole year before the release of the final). I got that date from the Apploader on the disc image, but it's very wrong and usually never correct. I'm amazed I was the one who contributed that all those years ago, ha.

Some more clues: such early prototypes would normally be on NPDP carts, rather than NR discs. Also, there is little reason to put such a far future date label on an NR disc. --Drx (talk) 12:54, October 28, 2016 (EDT)
